Laminated GlassOverviewLaminated glass is manufactured by permanently bonding two or more lites of glass with one or more interlayers of PVB (Polyvinyl Butyral) or resin. Should breakage occur, the interlayer holds the glass fragments together in the opening, reducing potential for injury while also maintaining security. The overall strength and safety features of laminated glass may be increased by increasing the thickness of the interlayer(s); increasing the total number of layers; and increasing the strength of the individual lites of glass by heat treating. Historically, the use of laminated glass has been limited to applications where security or safety glazing is required. With the advent of the use of resin in the manufacture of laminated glass as well as advances in traditional PVB inter-layers, tremendous possibilities now also exist for decorative applications. Examples of decorative possibilities are outlined in the Laminated Art Glass area of this website ApplicationsWhen properly installed and suitably configured, laminated glass can provide:
Potential applications for laminated glass are varied. Some common uses include:
Each application should be evaluated to determine the appropriate combination and thickness of the glass and interlayer required to provide the level of safety and security intended.
